In the early 1960s, the Clarendon School District integrated. I remember learning in the 6th or 7th grade that the perspective most of my generation had about minorities was fueled by ignorance. I began to form my own opinion as to whether I should despise someone based solely on the color of their skin. I struggled in my “coming of age” period and for a couple of years in the late 60’s I was very troubled. My lack of self-discipline became so bad I was asked to leave school. My parents asked me if I wanted to finish school and I said yes, so they arranged for me to live with my sister Pauline and her family in another town while I finished the last year and a half of school. |
